Private health insurance in Spain for foreigners

You can have Spanish private health insurance if you live in Spain.

  • NIE with your address
  • Bank account in Spain
  • If you do not have NIE:
  • Residence in Spain for at least 6 months a year
  • Residence address in Spain
  • Valid passport
  • Bank account in Spain

Types of private health insurance available

  • In Spain, private health insurance can vary in terms of coverage and services offered. Here are the most common types:
  • Full private health insurance with no co-payments: You pay one premium every month and you can go to the doctor without paying more as often as you like. They include all possible medical services unlimitedly, general medicine, specialists, emergencies, diagnostic tests, operations, hospitalisation, etc. You can only go to doctors and hospitals with which the company has an agreement.
  • Complete private medical insurance with co-payments: As in the previous case but you pay a small amount between €1 and €10 each time you go to the doctor. The price is cheaper.
  • Private health insurance with reimbursement: This is the most complete. You can go to any doctor in the world. But first you have to pay the bill yourself and then the company reimburses you a % of the bill.
